councillor in the southern
as a suspect in a case of misappropriation of funds amounting to some HUF 50
million (EUR 200,000) by weekly news magazine HVG last week. The State
Prosecutor’s Office has been investigating seven foundations and organisations
that applied for and received government funding, of which over HUF 50 million
(EUR 203,205) seems to have disappeared.
Szabó, spokesman for the Bács-Kiskun County Prosecutor’s Office told HVG that
an inquiry by the Kiskunhalas town prosecutor’s office, begun in 2005, is
looking into the legality of the operations at the organisations in question.
“In the course of the inquiry, launched on suspicion of accounting
irregularities, it became apparent that several foundations and organisations
could not account for their use of state money won through ministerial and
local authority tenders,” he said. Szabó said that an investigation is ongoing
against “János Z.” and six accomplices on the suspicion of serious fraud.
Citing unnamed sources, HVG named president of the MSZP’s
regional association, János Zuschlag, as the suspect.
by HVG for comment, Zuschlag said he did not wish to issue a statement on the
matter other than to say he has lodged a complaint against the accusations.
