Despite the decline in the central region, one in every three
crimes committed in Hungary was here.
In Budapest, with a population of 1.7 million, the statistics
office reported 626 crimes per 10,000 residents, 1.8-times more than
in neighbouring Pest County, which is also part of the central
region. However, crime in Budapest was down by 5.2 percent or
106,000 felonies, while elsewhere in the region it was up by 5.3
percent, where the total number of crimes reported was 40,000.
Seven out of ten crimes committed in Budapest were crimes
against property, up by 3.6 percent compared to 2006. Traffic crimes
were up by 14 percent, crimes against public order were down by 8
