Clients of Vodafone can now enjoy high-speed internet access on Budapest’s blue and red subway lines, both in the stations and tunnels, representatives of Vodafone, developer Huawei and Budapest Transportation Centre (BKK) announced this week. The yellow line will feature the same service from early January. “For now the advantages of our network development can mostly be enjoyed by our clients living in the countryside, but we will cover Budapest as well by March 2012,” said Vodafone CEO György Beck. According to BKK CEO Dávid Vitézy, Budapest is ahead of many Eastern European cities and even London, where the 3G network on the Tube is only going to be available by the time of the 2012 Summer Olympics. A recent study revealed that around one-fifth of mobile subscribers are using smart phones, which means that potentially tens of thousands of people will be able to spend their time on the subway more effectively.
