Santa Claus Factory hopes to boost donations by 25% this year
The volunteers behind the Santa Claus Factory on Felvonulási tér hope to prepare gifts for 200,000 people in need this year.
Volunteers are collecting clothes, toys, non-perishable foodstuffs and toiletries from this Friday until just before Christmas at the Santa Claus Factory on Felvonulási tér (near Heroes’ Square) in District XIV and at several shopping centres nationwide.
The Santa Claus Factory, which sets out to help families in need and give them a little Christmas magic, is now in its seventh year. The beneficiaries are selected and supplied with the donated goods by the Hungarian Red Cross because it has the necessary information and logistics. In addition to families, orphans are on the list of those receiving presents and will have a chance to visit the Santa Claus Factory.
Last year, thanks to the generous donations of Hungarian and foreign companies and private individuals, 161,000 could be given a happier Christmas. The organisers hope to raise the number of recipients to 200,000 this year.
What, when & where
Non-perishable food items such as tinned foods, salt, flour, sugar and pasta are being collected as well as toiletries, clothing and of course sweets. Toys and books will be gratefully received. Donations can be made either on Felvonulási tér or at one of the 14 participating shopping centres, including the Duna Plaza, Csepel Plaza and Corvin malls in Budapest.
It’s welcome if the donations are wrapped but they don’t have to be; they can simply be handed over in bags or boxes. Packages can also be given in at post offices, which will deliver them free of charge to the Red Cross. The address “MIKULÁSGYÁR” needs to be written on the package in block capitals.
Volunteers make up half of those who will wrap the donations with businesses also pitching in by sending over their employees to assist on company time.
Music and skating
Each weekend and on almost every weekday there will be concerts for young and old on the Felvonulási tér stage. The heart-warming decorations promise to be even more festive than in the past. Visitors can skate free on the 250-square-metre ice rink or warm up in the marquee. Of course Santa Claus himself will not be lacking either.
The Santa Claus Factory is also raising money by hiring out the 800-square-metre marquee, the “Charity Event Hall”, for company parties.
