Opposition green party LMP has called for privatisation contracts relating to Budapest Airport Ltd, the operator of Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport, to be made public.
The move comes the week after the prime minister’s “accountability commissioner” Gyula Budai asserted that the taxpayer could face a bill of HUF 1 trillion (EUR 3.41 billion) in compensation if the airport operator invokes certain “secret clauses”.
Whistle-blowing website atlatszo.hu has threatened to sue Budai if he does not issue copies of the documents. Analysts have cast doubt on Budai’s assertions. The commissioner is charged with uncovering cases of corruption exclusively during the eight years of Socialist-led government that preceded the election victory of conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in 2010.
