Kraszna Horka Castle, among Slovakia best-preserved medieval structures, was heavily damaged by fire last Saturday. The 13th-century gothic castle, a National Cultural Monument in eastern Slovakia and former Hungary, suffered the collapse of its roof and damage to exhibits inside, while forest surrounding the hill-top building was also set ablaze.
The Slovak National Museum said that despite extensive damage 90 per cent of the collections were saved. Hungary offered its help to restore the castle, which had been renovated in 2010 and 2011.
Officials blamed two 12-year-old children who were attempting to light cigarettes for sparking the blaze although Stanislav Peti of the local fire brigade said the cause was regular spring grass-burning at a nearby settlement.
