State-owned truck manufacturer Rába may go in to business with Volvo to manufacture 300 buses for Budapest Public Transportation Company (BKV), unnamed sources have told news portal index.hu. It was announced in October that 150 new Mercedes buses will appear on BKV lines but they will be operated by a subcontractor. According to index.hu BKV will switch back to actually purchasing the vehicles, the chassis of which would be provided by Volvo and axles and assembly by Rába. The left-leaning HVG publication cited sources saying that the government is planning to develop Rába instead of utilising its current capacity, which is why there have been no orders so far for vehicles manufactured by domestic companies. The state completed the majority purchase of Rába in April but even before this there were rumours that the government has a much bigger task in mind for it, namely to produce buses again and to supply the state bus companies with vehicles more or less exclusively.
