The record Danube flood has created the perfect conditions for mosquito larvae to thrive and survive. According to state news agency MTI, billions of mosquitoes hatch daily in the stagnant waters leftover after the Danube burst it banks.
Officials are laying extra spraying and other control methods to battle the onslaught of the beasts, but have yet to gain the upper hand due to the large area they need to cover.
As reported earlier this month, 2013 already faced more mosquitoes than usual, which were tackled both chemically and biologically before the flood hit, especially near Lake Balaton and Budapest. The chemicals and biological agents used are said to be safe for humans because they do not affect the warm-blooded and are not strong. More than double of the usual amount of spraying will be needed in the affected areas.
