It’s getting cold in Budapest! For many of the city’s most destitute, the chilly weather is more than an annoyance. It might be a matter of survival. Anyone walking down the streets of Budapest can witness that homelessness is a serious problem crying out for lasting solutions. In upcoming issues The Budapest Times will be running a series of articles on the shelter situation, where a shortage of space and dangerous conditions force many to remain sleeping rough. We will meet homeless individuals to find out what they’re doing to keep warm, to stay safe and to survive the winter. We will go into some of Budapest’s many shelters to see what awaits those “lucky” enough to get in. Finally, we will ask what the government is doing to address these issues. With the passage of measures banning homeless people from the city centre and harsher restrictions on food programs, can we expect anything more than attempts to hide the problem? Is the government combating homelessness or combating the homeless? Next week we’ll begin to search for some answers.
