Radical nationalist party Jobbik has proposed that the moratorium under which debtors are spared eviction from their homes during the winter months should be immediately extended indefinitely. Jobbik MP Dániel Kárpát said several tens of thousands of families struggling with mortgage payments are about to lose their homes. If this happens, the chances of their again leading a decent life would be minimal, he said. Therefore the moratorium should be maintained until issues around troubled debtors were fully resolved. Kárpát suggested that the new Parliament should convene as soon as possible because the government’s measures so far to assist people with foreign-currency loans had proved futile. No economic improvement would be possible while people spent 2-3 % of gross domestic product on servicing their debts, he added.
