Many of your readers will have a vote in the municipal elections in autumn when they will be able to choose both their district mayor and the Budapest mayor. Let us look at Mr. Tarlós, Budapest’s Mayor.
His policy toward homeless people has been very cruel. They are banned from sleeping rough or even sitting around in parks or squares in the daytime. This removes them from contact with friendly locals who might give them some money or food.
Mr. Tarlós closed down the Merlin Theatre with only vague promises about when and where it might be reopened. The Merlin was in District V’s Gerlóczy utca and many of the shops, cafés and bars in that street have been closed.
It is as if Mr. Tarlós wanted to create a cordon sanitaire round his town hall similar to that which Mr. Chirac tried to create around his Hotel de Ville when he was mayor of Paris.
