Viktor Orbán thought that he would jostle the mood a little in Ukraine. Just to make sure nothing remains so peaceful there. If the Russians are demanding autonomy on the eastern side of the country, why wouldn’t the general of Felcsút demand the same autonomy for the western side of the country? Right place in the right time. The Ukrainians reacted in a little bit of a snappy way, because under the flag of demanding autonomy, their country is being occupied and there is blood on the streets.
Many people probably haven’t realised in the secure warmth of the scorned European Union and NATO, but there is a WAR going on next to us. Not that Orbán-related, fist-shaking, freedom-fighting thing, but that machine-gun shooting, real-worldly dying thing. This can be the reason for the short-tempered rejection with which the European diplomacy received the proposal of Hungarian autonomy. They miss a second front in the fight to keep Ukraine together like Antal Rogán misses an extensive inspection of wealth.
That’s that about the future of autonomy. The great power whose support is essential to make it real cannot do anything other in this situation than loudly opposing it. It was a really ingenious ploy.
Now there are two possible cases. The prime minister of the nation is incompetent to the point of debility, and this is why he is peeking into a barrel of gunpowder with a torch, because the bullshit generator of Habony creates texts like this from the nationalist-revisionist ranting of the existing right-wing. Irrespectively of what consequences this will have for the Hungarians living in Subcarpathia, who will be regarded as traitors and potential dissidents by the nationalist population. (Meanwhile, Orbán is eating sunflower seeds in the grandstand.)
Regarding education, healthcare and economy, this can easily be the explanation; I mean the irresponsibility boosted with incompetency, in this case the Matolcsyism of foreign policy. The truth is revealed sooner on international grounds.
The other possibility is worse. He might be serious about this. A month has passed since the elections, there hasn’t been a word uttered about the reduction of overhead ever since. We almost miss it. Obviously they do too, but the supplies have run out. A new silver bullet is needed. Something that has not been before. The Hungarian society is the captive of two traumas: the breaking up of the historical Hungary (Trianon) and the decline of governmental care (political system change). The reduction of overhead set the socialist dream to music. The other task remains to be completed.
If he could take back a township, or if he cannot, a village, or if that fails too, an accommodation road, he would be the Second State Founder, the historical greatness who defeated Trianon. He probably concluded that it is not hopeless to try. The program of territorial autonomy together with dual citizenship does not mean anything else.
What do they call an independent territory where a group of citizens live? A country. Territorial autonomy combined with dual citizenship equals the modification of borders. Subcarpathia is not first on the revisionist list, but that’s where there is a situation. We should dare to demand a little. Maybe he hopes that the time might come in Ukraine, sinking into chaos and civil war, when the Ukrainians living in Subcarpathia would prefer to live in a wealthy European country where there is peace. They would vote for secession for that.
The problems with this scenario are the following:
1. If somebody listens to the Hungarian common speech they can come to the conclusion that one third of the country is Jewish. Because a third of the news, articles and comments are about them. However, there are less than 100,000 of them, and the Jewish identity is mostly brought out from them by the attacks. They speak Hungarian, they consider themselves Hungarians. Still. Another third of the county probably consists of Gypsies, because a central issue of politics is the relation to them, this can make political parties ascend or fall. However, there are only some hundred thousands of them. They speak Hungarian and consider themselves Hungarians. Living together is going oh so smoothly. So integrating almost 1 million Ukrainians, who don’t speak Hungarian and wouldn’t consider themselves Hungarians would be child’s play; in a country where the only people they hate more than Jews and Gypsies are immigrants.
2. There is no modification of borders in Europe that does not need the acquiescence of the European countries. The acquiescence of the countries against which the government has been fighting a war of independence in a jungle of insults and economical damages. Who would validate the new set-up? The Azerbaijanis, Kazakhs, Qatarians – those, who the government chose instead of the West, or the West? France was screwing with us, the Entente was screwing with us, the world was screwing with us. That is why Trianon happened. What is the national strategy of the government of national matters? Systematically screwing with everybody who could be indispensable allies at an imaginary peace talk, and make up without principles to everyone who is uninteresting in regards of the great national issue.
3. Except for one. Yes, her. The only way out is if the new borders are forced out by Russia, if she is our friend. The others will accept the reality. This has happened before. Looking for revision on the wrong side. We will lose again.
We are alone, Vladimir, alone.
That is not a problem though. A hundred years have passed and we need to be reminded of the wrongs, there is no Hungarian identity without them. We need Trianon. It makes us who we are. If it didn’t, then what would remain for us?
