The warning signs of low turnout in the recent European parliamentary elections must not be ignored, the Foreign Ministry’s State Secretary for EU Affairs has told an international conference in Budapest. Addressing the conference titled “EU Reform: a more competitive, flexible and democratically accountable EU”, Enikő Győri said that to restore people’s trust in the EU, member states should reach consensus on common objectives. She called for respecting EU treaties and focusing on subsidiarity, as well as maintaining the bloc’s integrity. These objectives can be best served through efficient cooperation by strong institutions and strong member states, Győri told the conference co-hosted by the Századvég Foundation and the British Embassy.
