A building caught on fire and despite the efforts of numerous firemen its roof structure and top floor were destroyed. Normally, not a big deal, as unfortunately something similar happens almost every day in Budapest. But this time it was a beautiful palace on the UNESCO World Heritage Andrássy út (nr. 83-85), and if this wasn’t Hungary its devastation could probably have been avoided. The building has had a long and complicated history in the past 15 years – with the involvement of the municipality, bankrupted and offshore companies – which will be the subject of a feature in the next edition of The Budapest Times. For now here are two facts: the reconstruction of the roof structure began in 2000 and the fire of 2014 started during the reconstruction of the roof structure.
