Ambassador Fakılı read a personal message from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, saying the country would “use its experience in the name of humanity and for regional and global peace”.
“The Republic of Turkey has a foreign policy understanding which prioritises peace, prudence, justice and welfare in the world; respects political independence and the territorial integrity of each country, universal humanitarian values and human rights and freedoms,” Erdogan’s message said.
He added that with its growing economy, developing democracy, commitment to European Union membership and high standing in international forums, Turkey would not shy away from using its experience in the name of humanity for regional and global peace.
This year was the 91st anniversary of the official founding of the Turkish Republic, led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. On October 29, 1923, the new name of the nation and its status as a republic were declared. A vote in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey saw Atatürk elected as first president of the new state by unanimous vote.
