Growth continues at Budapest Airport where airlines Iberia and Iberia Express will launch a Madrid service this year. Spain’s largest carrier, Iberia, will operate a seasonal three-times-a-week service from June, and its low-cost subsidiary, Iberia Express, will begin a four-times-a-week complementary service from July. Working in concert with each other, the airlines will coordinate the new schedule to provide full connectivity to their networks, a strategy that has proven successful while launching new routes from other European cities.
Iberia and Iberia Express will join Wizz Air and Ryanair in offering a direct service to the Spanish capital, making Spain the seventh-largest country market served from Budapest. Offering a total of 1,260 weekly seats, arrival in the Madrid market will give Iberia an 18% share and Iberia Express a 23% share of weekly flights on the competitive route during the summer season (according to Innovata schedule data, week commencing June 7, 2015).
Kam Jandu, chief commercial officer, Budapest Airport said: “I am so pleased that Spain’s national carrier will now also be serving the vital Madrid trunk route. This new competitive service is also a great indicator of economic recovery in Spain. Budapest Airport itself has continued to charge ahead with an average 7% growth throughout 2014 as our support of new airlines and new routes has proven successful time and again. We’re all really looking forward to welcoming both carriers next summer – a year that is already promising extensive further growth for us.”
That’s so cool! Hope to get to Madrid soon, it is an amazing and vibrant city and I recommend everyone to visit the capital. Everyone knows Barcelona after ’92 Olympics, but Madrid is an undiscovered and great city with a high potential growth in the next few years.
