Like all the European Union, Hungary condemns Russia’s territorial aggression against Ukraine day by day, Zsolt Németh, the Fidesz head of parliament’s foreign affairs committee, has said on a two-day visit to Kiev with Socialist MP Attila Mesterházy. The two expressed Hungary’s solidarity with Ukraine and commitment to its territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence. Németh said the sides must make every effort to settle the conflict in eastern Ukraine peacefully, by implementing the Minsk agreement and by maintaining dialogue between Russia and other international players. He said the Hungarian minority in western Ukrainian Transcarpathia wants peace, stability and predictability in a democratic Ukraine that can carry out constitutional reform, decentralisation and guarantee the rights pledged by the Kiev leadership. Hungary supports Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration and is strongly committed to its cyber security, Németh said. Hungary also frequently sent humanitarian aid to Transcarpathian Hungarians and other parts of Ukraine.
It is important for Hungary to guard against any perception that it is Putin’s client and disloyal member of the European community.
This is particularly important given the Russia’s disregard for the peaceful arrangements in Europe and given the lack of internal controls on political choices Kremlin’s unaccountable boss makes. Any weakening of solidarity among those threatened would be very dangerous.
