Heavy machines have once again started to roar at Ferenc Liszt International Airport in the area between the two large maintenance and repair hangars. Budapest Airport is building a brand-new hangar for Wizz Air, which will commence operation of its maintenance base in Budapest from September. The general contractor of the hangar construction is Market Építő Zrt.
Wizz Air is expected to move into the facility in September. The 15-year lease for the 2000-square-metre hangar and 200-square-metre service facility was signed by the airline and Budapest Airport last June.
The development will accommodate a single aircraft. Its design takes into consideration that in the years ahead the Wizz Air fleet may be extended with Airbus A 321 aircraft featuring “sharklets”, with a body almost seven metres longer than the currently operated A 320 variety.
“This year, one of our largest development projects is the new hangar to be built for Wizz Air with a total investment of close to HUF 1 billion,” René Droese, property director of Budapest Airport, said. “Wizz Air is the biggest airline partner of Budapest Airport in terms of passenger traffic, and the new hangar is another step towards further strengthening the presence of Wizz on-airport, and the aircraft maintenance business in general.”
