The United States understands that as a sovereign nation, Hungary has the right to protect its borders, US Ambassador Colleen Bell said in an interview with public news channel M1 broadcast on Saturday. The ambassador said that since the migrant crisis is a global one, the US is not in a position to prescribe a solution for it.
“The migration crisis is a global crisis. It’s particularly challenging here in Europe,” Bell said. The US knew that Hungary was among the countries that had been most challenged by the crisis, as it lay on the periphery of the Schengen zone.
“Processing all of these individuals coming through, in compliance with the Dublin Agreement, was extremely difficult for Hungary and we understand that,” she added.
Bell said the US does not intend to criticise Hungary’s choices in trying to manage the migrant crisis, but it does support the European Union’s efforts to come up with a “comprehensive and unified approach to this crisis”. The US reminded every country of the importance of ensuring the safety of refugees and treating them humanely and with dignity.
“Hungary is not being singled out with that message,” Bell said, adding that it is important to make sure every country understands that many refugees are fleeing violent extremism. “They are not terrorists. They are fleeing very complicated and difficult circumstances.”
Bell said that as one of the world’s most accepting countries, the US took in refugees from over 70 countries last year alone. This was why the US understood “the importance of screening individuals and processing for safety and security”.
On the topic of inspecting the Thunder Cloud 2015 joint exercise, Bell noted that over the last year there had been a “major uptick in exercises as a result of Operation Atlantic Resolve”, one of the advances that came out of last year’s NATO summit in Wales. She said joint military exercises will continue so NATO can improve inner operability with its allies.
Hungary is an excellent NATO ally, Bell said. “The Hungarian military’s professionalism, enthusiasm and talent are something that we all recognise. Hungary should be very proud of their military,” she said. In terms of NATO contribution, at Wales, Hungary had committed to increase their spending of GDP. Hungary is represented by nearly 300 soldiers at the Thunder Cloud 2015 joint training and the US is present with 350 soldiers on A-10 fighters, nine of which are stationed in Pápa.
Bell described Hungary-US relations as mature, complex and dynamic. They have strengths and there are areas where further work is needed to make progress, she added. Security co-operation was excellent and she foresaw it as growing and expanding because the security environment was continually changing and, as allies, the two countries needed to work together, adapting to the changes.
Law enforcement co-operation is also excellent, she said. Hungary could create an overall safe environment for its citizens, with incidences of gun violence being extremely low, which should be commended. “We’ll continue law enforcement and we’ll continue to work on our security cooperation, and we’ll continue to express concerns wherever there may be concerns.
“It’s a two-way street because occasionally if I mention any concerns, you can be sure that there are members of the Hungarian government who are also expressing their concerns to me and we talk, and we believe in the utility of diplomatic dialogue and so much of the progress that is evolving from our cooperation is taking place in private rooms, with diplomatic dialogue at the forefront.”
Does that apply to Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen or Libya? Ask the ambassador.
Incredibile !
A re you sure ? An American ambassador said so ?
It appears to me that Mr Orban’s Hungarian administration is filled with hypocrites of the worst kind.
I’ll explain why.
Orban praises the failed Hungarian revolt against the Soviets in 1956, in which thousands were killed and hundreds of thousands fled as refugees to Europe and North America.
Orban however is opposed to accepting refugees, even Christian or atheist refugees, from war-torn countries such as Syria.
Orban also continues to irritate his neighbours over the question of Hungarian minorities, even though Hungary forcibly Magyarised 1million+ Slovaks who currently live in Hungary and speak Hungarian, but have proven Slavic DNA.
Perhaps Hungary should be renamed the land of the hypocrites. For a nation that has not won a military victory since the early Middle Ages, and has been on the wrong side of every war since then, one would have thought that the Hungarians would have learned their lesson by now.
It is ironic that most ‘Hungarians’ living in Hungary today have nothing to do with the dark, squat, Asiatic hordes that invaded Europe a thousand years or so ago. Their DNA, according to Canadian tests, is not Magyar but … Slav and specifically Slovak.
And before Hungarian extremists start saying there is no such thing as a Slovak, just a mountain Magyar, letters from Sir Isaac Newton, the world’s most prominent physicist, written in the 1600s, refer to “Sclavonia,” the Latin name for Slovakia, thus rejecting Budapest’s claims that there is no such thing as a Slovak nation.
By the way, we all love the Hungarian people and Hungarian history (and Hungarian food, culture, music, etc) — we just don’t like extreme nationalism and extreme hypocrisy.
That’s a rather bigotted set of statements which somehwat put a large hole in your entire argument. Maybe you should spend some time In Hungary first before making such silly generalisations.
“by the way,we all love the Hungarian people etc.etc..”..man you are full of it.! The current crop of Illegal invaders have nothing in common with the 1956 situation. Please check what constitutes a refugee under the Geneva Conventions .I was a 56 refugee…first safe country for asylum..not trashing borders to get to the fattest social security systems in Europe…83% young unaccompanied males, now busy raping Sweden and Germany.
You are offended by Hungarian nationalism ?..GOOD !
PS..I fart in your general direction Francis
The US under Obama is NO one to give any advice as he has driven the US to its knees. Hungary needs to put Hungary first, we in Australia took many ‘boat people’ who illegally entered our country in the recent past and we are still paying the price in every way. Muslim culture is not inclusive and their traditions are often barbaric, intolerance, sexual mutilation and belief in a book that condones sexual slavery, murder of the infidel…….be careful
Well put!
