Arena rock favourites Imagine Dragons called their latest album “Smoke + Mirrors”, an appropriate title to describe their special effects-laden live show, packed with lasers, LED lighting, live videos, artificial smoke and a big ramp into the crowd. They honed their act playing the Las Vegas Strip, where the energy level has to be high to draw a crowd, and they will be back in Europe, with a show at Papp László Budapest Sportaréna on January 20.
Expect mass lighted mobile phones during couples-clutching power ballads and a sea of pumping arms when the high-decibel intensity goes up a level or two.
Some Hungarian fans may have already caught them at Sziget 2014. Reviewers on the island commented: “Imagine Dragons came, played their songs and took everything”, and “their show should have been given by prescription to everyone”.
Originating at Utah’s Brigham Young University in 2008 and graduating to become Las Vegas, and then global, sweethearts, Imagine Dragons are probably America’s biggest young guns at the moment, rising from the Strip to massive arenas over the past three years on the strength of their 2012 debut record, “Night Visions”.
A breakout album the following year, selling by the bucket-load, it peaked at number two on the US and UK charts. The album’s chest-pounding crossover hits included one, “Radioactive”, that became a monster single and earned a Grammy for Best Rock Performance.
According to Billboard, Imagine Dragons topped the year-end rock rankings and were named The Breakthrough Band of 2013. They have won almost everything: Grammy, American Music, Billboard and World Music awards, among others.
They have sold over 24 million singles worldwide and six million copies of their two albums. A Deluxe Edition of “Smoke + Mirrors” helped the sales.
