A petition launched by the left-wing European Humanist Federation (EHF) seeking to initiate a European Union procedure against Hungary for violating democratic values has garnered only a few thousand signatures, daily Magyar Idok has reported. The EHF civil initiative was registered by the European Commission last November and the EHF has one year to collect one million signatures in order to have the EU act. According to Magyar Idok’s information, the EHF has collected fewer than 10,000 signatures but no precise figure is available. An EHF spokesman refused to reveal the number to the paper and the EC has also declined to do so, the paper said. At least 1 million citizens from seven member states must show support in order for a Europe civil initiative to be launched. MEP György Schöpflin said the EHF action is a political issue intended to embarrass Hungary.
