Hungary does more to protect the European Union’s external borders than Germany, European People’s Party (EPP) group leader Manfred Weber has told daily Magyar Hirlap. This should be taken into consideration when solidarity and the distribution of funds are discussed concerning receiving migrants, he said. Weber disagrees with the planned 250,000 euro fine on countries that reject the migrant quota. He doubts that the proposal would get majority support in the European Parliament, and said the EPP would try to improve the European Commission’s initiative. The Hungarian government has the right to ask citizens’ opinions on this issue, he said, referring to a planned referendum. Weber said that by now the views of German Chancellor Angela Markel and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán could be brought in line, and the EPP’s position includes strict border control and taking responsibility.
