    Hungarian EEG to be sent to outer space – paper

    Budapest, February 7 (MTI) – The space shuttle Atlantis,
    scheduled to be launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, today with
    five American and two German astronauts aboard, will carry a
    Hungarian brain research instrument to the international space
    station, national daily Nepszabadsag reported on Thursday.

    Spending on R+D up to 1pc of GDP in 2006 – report

    Budapest, February 5 (MTI) – Hungary spent 238 billion forints
    (922.5 million euros) or one percent of its GDP on research and
    development in 2006, up from 200 billion forints in 2005, the latest
    biannual report by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) seen by
    MTI on Tuesday said.

    Hungary, India scientific co-operation

    Hungary, Spain co-operate on nuclear research project

    Budapest, January 22 (MTI) – While Hungary and Spain are rivals
    in a competition to host the headquarters of the European Union’s
    spallation source ESS project, the two countries have agreed to
    co-operate in certain fields, national daily Nepszabadsag reported

    Hungarian-born US scientist Teller remembered in Budapest

    Budapest, January 16 (MTI) – Hungarian academics on Wednesday
    held a session to mark the 100th birth anniversary of renowned
    Hungarian-born American nuclear physicist Edward Teller, dubbed the
    father of the hydrogen bomb, at Budapest’s Academy of Sciences MTA. Addressing the session, MTA president E. Sylvester Vizi called
    Teller, who emigrated to the United States in the mid-1930s, someone
    “who changed the course of the world and played an outstanding role
    in eliminating bolshevism (starting from 1918) that could not be
    compared to anybody else’s in the world.”

    Nearly 27,000 students get gov’t scholarships

    Budapest, January 2 (MTI) – Nearly 27,000 students from
    disadvantaged backgrounds have received scholarships as part of the
    government’s Utravalo (For the Road) scheme since 2005, an education
    ministry official said in Budapest on Tuesday. In the 2007/2008 academic year, as many as 11,000 new
    scholarships were granted to underprivileged students, along with
    financial assistance to the teachers who have been working with
    them. The total budget of this year’s programme was 2 billion
    forints (about 8 million euros).

    Hungarian student wins Gold at science Olypmics in Taipei

    Budapest, December 11 (MTI) – Hungarian student Aron Szigetvari
    won a Gold medal at the International Junior Science Olympics held
    in Taipei on December 2-11, the student’s teacher told MTI on
    Tuesday. It was the first time that a Hungarian secondary school student
    fetched a gold at the junior Olympics organised for U16 contestants,
    the biology-chemistry teacher Attila Villanyi said. Szigetvari, a student of the Budapest Fazekas Mihaly secondary
    school, was member of the six-member Hungarian student team.    At the Games participants had to fill in a 25-question test in
    biology, chemistry and physics and then give account of their
    indepth knowledge of the subjects in additional rounds.     The Junior Science Olympics was established by Indonesia in 2004.

    Nobel laureate remembered in Szeged

    Budapest, December 7 (MTI) – Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, the only
    Hungarian to receive the Nobel Prize for scientific work actually
    done in Hungary, was remembered in Szeged, S Hungary, on Friday,
    marking the 70th anniversary of the awards ceremony.
